This wine is 100% Merlot from the granite soils of Muscadet. As far as we know it’s the only Merlot from the area, and is a stand-out in every way. Flavours of blueberry and and cherry layered with fig and chocolate. Smooth tannins and a hint of spices at the finish. This is a wine with full body that still manages to feel light.

The Story: Maverick Muscadet producer Jérôme Bretaudeau of Domaine de Bellevue is devoted to the compelling terroir of Muscadet, but is known for forging his own path. Jérôme is a true lover of wine, and has set out to grow the grapes he likes to drink. He enjoys Merlot, and searched for the perfect spot to grow his own. Merlot is a real rarity in the Loire and Ornaté proves there certainly should be more! Jerome’s ability to produce these amazing wines from grapes atypical of the region confirms not only his talent, but also that is reputation as a rising star is well-deserved.

Vinification: Grapes from a Southeast-facing half-hectare plot of Merlot on soils of decomposed granite with pink and white quartz. Planted in the early 2000’s. Grapes are hand harvested, de-stemmed and macerated for 10 days in small old oak barrels. Later aged for one year in small oak barrels.

Match it with: Roast vegetables, lightly-spiced duck or even a chicken terrine.
