VDF "Tramuntana" (Red) 2021
Mare Nostrum Vini, a project Inspired by a childhood spent growing up along the mediterranean coast, was founded by Antoine Isenbrandt and Athénaïs de Béru . Each of the wines come from carefully selected vineyards starting in the South of France and expanding across the Mediterranean. The wines all have a common link, each is named after the wind that influences the region from which they come and plays a crucial role in the character that can be discovered in each bottle.
Tramuntana: the northwest wind, whose name means “through the mountains” in Catalan. Like the Mistral in Languedoc, it is dominant and powerful, blowing year-round — in both winter and summer — helping to keep the vines healthy and disease-free, like a true "doctor wind."
Terroir: 90 year old vines, goblet trained, 400m altitude sand soils
Vinification: 100% Carignan is hand harvested. Whole bunch fermentation begins spontaneously with indigenous yeast in wooden vats before being transferred to stainless steel tanks for settling. The wine is then aged for 30months in old oak barriques before bottling.
