In the east of Austria, on the edge of the Pannonian plain, the Burgenland region seems like another country. The misty Lake Neusiedl is centre stage in Burgenland, providing the surrounding vineyards, especially the noble red grapes, with a much needed cooling influence in the hot sunshine.                

There is quite a variety of difference between the various sub-regions of Burgenland. The southern-most point, Eisenberg Hill, is influenced by the complexity of the local soils and the fresh climate of neighbouring Steiemark – good conditions for reds to develop minerality. In Mittelburgenland, the loam soils give deep fruit flavours to Blaufränkisch wines, while on the western shore of the lake, in Neusiedlersee-Hügelland, the signature Blaufränkisch comes with grippy tannins and outstanding minerality. The Leitha mountain range, on the east of the lake, has soils rich in limestone and slate, the perfect set-up for Blaufränkisch and complex whites to flourish. There is also Seewinkel, where much of the sweet Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese wine is made with the influence of noble rot, which thrives in the humid atmosphere created by the Neusiedl and numerous smaller lakes.
