A 100% Roditis, an intense and expressive local grape which is a favourite of the Ligas family. A hazy orange-yellow colour in the glass, with an aromatic and rich nose of citrus fruits, apricot and distinct note of minerals. Medium body and fruity, with apricot and orange leading the way and a hint of a yeast. Crisp acidity to cleanse the palate and a fruity and refreshing finish. Meli says “this vintage is more of a beer style”, and the wine is reminiscent of a cloudy, fermented lemonade.

Roditis, an indigenous grape of Pella was highly valued in ancient Greece for its ability to ripen late whilst maintaining acidity. It was unfortunately decimated by Phylloxera in the 19th century, but thanks to artisanal winemakers like Ligas, Roditis is once again being recognised for it’s refreshing, expressive wines. When ripe, the Roditis skins get a red tint, and in hot years this cuvée sometimes has a little residual sugar.

On the label, the fingerprint surrounded by rocks from the site is a nod to her father– known widely as the defender of this grape. Meli now makes her own, slightly different style of Roditis, explaining, “I want to reveal another version of it.”

Vinification: Grapes from 20-25 year-old Roditis vines growing on clay and limestone soils are hand-harvested, gently pressed to avoid extraction of colour, then naturally fermented in a stainless steel tank. Aged in very old ex-Bordeaux barriques for 8-10 months. Unfined and unfiltered, with no added sulphites.

Match it with: smoked fish, ceviche, ham and melon, fried chicken.
