100% Moschomavro, a nearly-extinct local grape experiencing a revival thanks to a handful of winemakers in Northern Greece. A surprising light colour and a touch hazy, looks similar to unfiltered cranberry juice. Which aligns well with the flavours of stewed cranberries, dried currants, and a hint of saline. Almost non-existent tannins, lots of acidity and energy. A very alive, delightful wine.

The Story: Ktima Ligas was founded in 1985 in Thessaloniki, Greece by Thomas Ligas, with a quest to revive both the traditional varieties and agriculture of the Pella region through respect and cooperation with nature. Today the Domaine is run by his daughter Meli, who continues the focus on permaculture and local grapes, and adapts her cuvées to each vintage, parcel and variety. Moschomavro is a very rare grape, grown sparsely in a few areas of Northern Greece. Know for typically light tannins and moderate to fresh acidity, it was often used to ‘strengthen’ Xinomavro and was rarely used as a varietal wine

Vinification: From vines averaging 40 years-old growing on clay-limestone soils in Pera. Grapes are hand harvested and macerated on the skins (with no extraction or work on the skins) for 3 days at low temperature in stainless steel to heighten colour and fruit flavours. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Aged in old oak barrels for 3-4 months. Unfined and unfiltered, with no added sulphites.

Match it with: ideal as an aperitif, or with haloumi and pomegranate, roast pork loin.
