Mas des Agrunelles

France - Argelliers

“We first met thanks to wine, and now wine unites us.” That’s how winemaking duo Stéphanie Ponson and Fred Porro explain their relationship, famous for producing excellent organic and biodynamic wines in a place that owes its name to the surrounding sloe trees, known locally as argelliers.

Porro got into winemaking after tragedy struck. He was a motocross enthusiast, until an accident left him in a wheelchair. It was only when helping his sister devise a wine list for her restaurant that he discovered his love for everything to do with wines, giving him a new focus in life. He started Domaine De La Marèle in 2000, producing his first wine there a year later, in the clay and limestone soil. Stephanie Ponson had started Mas Nicot, in Murles (about 20 kilometres northwest of Montpellier), in 2004, when she took over eight hectares of vineyards that had been in the family since 1773. She converted the land to organic production, producing in low yields and just 8,000 bottles a year.

Mas Des Agrunelles is based on the same secluded plateau as Mas Nicot, in the communes of Argelliers and La Boissière, and surrounded by forests. Its dozen vineyards are on average 200 metres above sea level, and feature some of the coolest microclimates in the region. This is under the influence of cold winds blowing from the Cevennes via St Martin de Londres, where the Mistral and Tramontane winds meet. This airflow helps the grapes to resist mould and disease. In the higher vineyards, the soils contain Jurassic Comblanchien limestone, which helps develop acidity, and clays, which act as a cooling influence and retain moisture. In lower vineyards, there is a larger amount of alluvial soils.

Production across the vineyards is along biodynamic and organic principles, using no synthetic chemicals – only natural methods, such as ploughing the soil using horses.
