Founded in 1999 by the twin sisters Margherita and Francesca Padovani, Fonterenza is a 40 hectares estate in the Southern part of Montalcino (Tuscany). After several holiday trips with their parents in the old farmhouse when the two sisters were little (around 1976), Margherita and Francesca decided to leave Milano in 1997 to settle there and build their life-project.

Firstly cultivating 5 hectares of olive orchards, the twin sisters quickly got interested by producing wines and planted the 1st vines in 1999 then more in 2002 and 2005. With 4,2 hectares of vineyards planted on clay-limestone soils 420 metres above sea level with a South exposition, their choice  of using biodynamic principles became immediately obvious. The vineyards are spread on 3,5 hectares of Sangiovese and 0,7 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Getting into winemaking was not an easy path as the two sisters didn't have any previous experience nor knowledge. Luckily, Margherita and Francesca were supported by friendly winemakers such as Thierry Puzelat or Overnoy (Jura). As a result, they produced their very first vintage of Brunello in 2004.

Nowadays, the Italian duo finally has got the true recognition and status of its wines through making wines with heart and soul.

It appears that winemaking is in a way a matter of sensitivity that suits perfectly these two women...
